Ramona and Terry Button run Ramona Farms, the largest native-owned farm on the Gila River Indian Reservation. They specialize in ancient beans and grains.
The Florence Diversion Dam was built in 1922 to provide Gila River water to the Gila River Indian Reservation. Today the Gila River is almost dry coming into the diversion, but tribe has senior rights to the remaining water.
The Gila River tribe uses its water from the Central Arizona Project to create a wetland and aquifer recharge site next to the dry Gila River using native vegetation.
