The Coolidge Dam and San Carlos reservoir impound the Gila River on the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Because of drought, dewatering of the river and climate change the reservoir is at historic lows.
Ramona and Terry Button run Ramona Farms, the largest native-owned farm on the Gila River Indian Reservation. They specialize in ancient beans and grains.
The Florence Diversion Dam was built in 1922 to provide Gila River water to the Gila River Indian Reservation. Today the Gila River is almost dry coming into the diversion, but tribe has senior rights to the remaining water.
